Most of our PCs shipped with MS6178L Driver CD 550 000279 which contained the following:

Driver Device Version 'Unloaded' device description in Dev Manager
Audio Analog Devices SoundMax AD1881 processor PCI Multimedia Audio Device
Chipset Intel Core INF files PV 2.1 Unknown Device
Graphics Intel 'on-board' 810 GMCH Graphics Controller
(Based on the Intel i752 Controller)
PV2.1 PCI Graphics Controller
Some people have been switching on the AC97 Modem in the BIOS which will create the following device under device manager.
Unless you have installed an AMR Modem then please switch this off as it is not used. (See FAQ Q3)
PCI Card

The same drivers can also be found on:
550 000273
(but no manual)
550 000298 (Multi Support CD - 4 motherboards)

The BT machine shipped with Intel's PV 2.0 drivers.

Intel INF Files

These drivers will correctly identify the 810 Chipset and enable extra functionality within the ICH Controller such as UDMA33/66, Power Management, USB. As a result these drivers will be reloaded when the INF files are installed. If you want to check to see if the INF files have been loaded on your machine look for teh existance of the 'Firmware Hub' under device manager/System Resources.

The latest Intel Core drivers are version PV2.3 (1.4MB)

Please be aware that you must have at least version 2.2 if you have a 810M chipset. Only the 810M is capable of UDMA/66.

Driver files can be downloaded from the Intel WebSite.

Intel Ultra ATA Drivers

This replaces the DMA code for Intel 800 Series Chipsets. When you install this, the DMA tick box in Device manager (under the Disk & CD-ROM settings) will disappear and be replaced by a utility off the main program menu. This utility enables the ATA/66 (DMA66) capabilities of the chipset (810M only).

The latest Intel DMA/ATA driver is version 5.01 (1MB (English version))

Driver files can be downloaded from the Intel WebSite.

FAQs

Top
1. The marketing documentation says that I have a 8MB Video card but windows reports it as only 1 or 2MB ?
This is because the way that graphics memory is used in the Intel 810 Chipset is fundamentally different from the previous chipsets.

The graphics controller on the 810 chipset is built into the north bridge controller (GMCH - one of the two core components of an Intel chipset) which is placed directly next to main memory. What this means is that the graphics controller can utilize main memory as efficiently as the 'plug in card' would use local graphics memory placed on the card itself.

In normal running mode (Low resolution - with no 3D games loaded) then the controller will only use 1-2MB of main memory as that is all it requires. However - when you want to run a game or large application, it will dynamically allocate the extra memory that it requires (Then release it when finished). If you are using a 3D game with texture maps then it can allocate up to 20MB of memory to deal with it (Based on a 64MB of RAM).

Good & Bad points of 810 Solution:
Good: Scalable graphics cards with good 3D performance. If you still want to improve the graphics performance then you can just add more (main) memory.
Bad: You cannot upgrade your graphics card as there is no AGP slot although you may still use a PCI card. However, if the card is on the PCI bus it must deal with Arbitration (negotiating requests to send data) Issues with other PCI cards and therefore you will never get the same bandwidth as you would with the 810 solution.
2. I have just set On-Chip Video Windows Size to 'disabled' in the BIOS and now my machine will not boot.
There are three ways to recover from this:
1. Clear CMOS (remove battery)
2. Put in a temporary PCI graphics card and change the setting back.
3. I want to change my sound card to a PCI based card. How do I disable the onboard sound ?

The audio on this motherboard is a two piece solution which utilises the 'AC97 Link'. The AC97 link is much the same as an IDE cable in that it supports two devices of which you must set one device as a primary and the other secondary. The AC97 link is all onboard and can only be used for adding a sound and modem solution. This is because the chipset (South Bridge Controller) contains some of the H/W required to drive a modem or sound card.

Therefore to disable the sound you must do two things:
1. Disable the AC97 Audio in the BIOS (This is the digital processor that is built into the 810 chipset)
2. Disable the Analogue processor (SoundMax Device) by changing the link on the motherboard (Link = JP4 between PCI and AMR connectors)

If you have added a AC97 Modem into the AMR slot (Which we did not provide in these machines). Then you may have to change the links on the AMR card to make it the primary device.
